Actress Gugu Gumede is stepping into a powerful new role in Netflix’s upcoming drama The Polygamist, which is set to premiere on Friday, 12 June 2026. The talented actress will portray Joyce Gomora, a woman whose seemingly perfect life hides a much deeper and more emotional reality.
Joyce is presented as a woman who appears to have everything under control. To the outside world and her loyal social media followers, she represents the ideal family life and the perfect relationship. However, behind the carefully crafted image is someone struggling to keep her world from falling apart.
Joining Gumede on screen is actor Sdumo Mtshali, who plays Joyce’s husband, Jonasi Gomora. Together, the pair bring to life a complex relationship filled with love, heartbreak, and difficult choices.
Speaking to TV Mzansi, Gumede shared what drew her to the role and why Joyce’s journey was so meaningful to portray.
“That’s the beauty of it. There are moments in our lives that we can mask and we can forge our way through for social media. But then there are gut wrenching moments that force you to sit down and have a look at yourself and have a one-on-one conversation with yourself,” she said.
As the story unfolds, viewers will see Joyce transform from a woman focused on appearances into a mother determined to protect her family at all costs. Gumede explained that Joyce’s priorities begin to shift as she focuses on her children’s well-being and maintaining stability in their lives.
“You watch her transform into a lioness fiercely guarding her cubs, and that growth was incredibly rewarding to portray,” she added.
The actress also praised her co-star Sdumo Mtshali and revealed that building chemistry on screen came naturally because of the trust they shared.
“The chemistry was easy with this amazing actor. What a great scene partner,” said Gumede.
She explained that before filming emotional scenes, the two actors would spend time preparing together through breathing exercises, emotional warm-ups, and prayer. According to Gumede, that strong foundation of trust helped bring authenticity to their performances.
The role also allowed Gumede to explore the realities of social media culture, where many people present perfect versions of their lives online while facing personal struggles behind closed doors.
With its mix of family drama, emotional growth, and relationship challenges, The Polygamist promises to give viewers a story that is both relatable and thought-provoking. For Gumede, portraying Joyce was an opportunity to showcase the strength, vulnerability, and resilience of a woman determined to protect the people she loves.
