Actress, MC and podcast host Nonhle Thema has expressed gratitude to the The New York Times after the publication released an article about her late mother, Cynthia Shange.
Cynthia Shange passed away on Monday, 20 April 2026, at the age of 76. Following her passing, Nonhle took to social media to thank the internationally recognised publication for honouring her mother’s life and legacy.
Nonhle shared her appreciation online, writing, “Thank You to @nytimes for this incredible write up, by journalist Adam Nossiter on my Mothers Legacy. She WON.”
The emotional post reflected how proud Nonhle was to see her mother’s story celebrated on a global platform. Cynthia Shange was widely respected for her contribution to the entertainment industry and remained a beloved figure to many South Africans throughout her career.
In another heartfelt post, Nonhle shared a screenshot of an email she received from journalist Adam Nossiter, who wrote the article about Cynthia Shange’s passing.
Alongside the screenshot, she wrote, “So Grateful to have @nytimes give my mother, Cynthia Shange so much Love, Honour and Respect. she really WON everything in life. Highly Favoured In this life and the next ..Thank you Adam.”
The email from Adam Nossiter read, “Nonhle – so glad to bring your mother’s wonderful story to the attention of readers all over the world_ and so glad also that it was published in the Sunday edition of the NYT, which has far more readers than any other… Take care and thank you again for helping us. Adam.”
