Spotify, through its global LGBTQIA+ initiative GLOW, is celebrating the legendary Brenda Fassie—a fearless icon whose bold artistry and unapologetic individuality changed the face of African pop music. Known for her electrifying performances and cultural influence, Brenda remains one of Africa’s most beloved music legends.

Central to the celebration is ‘The Impact of Brenda Fassie’, a 10-minute documentary that premiered on Spotify’s YouTube channel. The film explores Brenda’s enduring influence across generations, featuring artists inspired by her sound and unapologetic presence, including Langa Mavuso, Zoë Modiga, Muneyi, and Nanette.

Spotify also brought Brenda’s legacy to life with a memorable event on Tuesday, 4 November 2025, at the Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg. The event included panel discussions and an immersive exhibition showcasing rare photos, performance footage, personal memorabilia, and iconic moments from her trailblazing career. Fans can experience the exhibition from 4 November to 4 December 2025.

Curated by Maria McCloy, the event featured Brenda’s family, friends, and key figures who shaped her journey, including Chicco Twala, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Blondie Makhene, David Mabaso, Dr Mbali Mazibuko, and journalist Charl Blignaut. Together, they reflected on Brenda’s impact on music, identity, and African pop culture.

“It was an honour to curate this event for Spotify GLOW and involve so many people who knew and loved Brenda,” said Maria McCloy. “She gave us so much—not just countless hits and albums, but inspiration for black people, women, and queer communities. From bubblegum to kwaito and Afro-pop, she led the way with talent, boldness, and humour. Johannesburg streets got a lot quieter the day she passed in 2004. I wish she was here to celebrate her 61st year.”

Spotify GLOW will also honour Brenda with a Times Square banner in New York City, highlighting her global influence beyond South Africa.

“Brenda Fassie was more than a performer—she was a revolution,” said Phiona Okumu, Head of Music at Spotify Sub-Saharan Africa. “Through her voice and her truth, she shattered boundaries with remarkable authenticity. With GLOW, we honour her for who she was and what she stood for.”
