Media personality Minnie Dlamini brought her magic to the stage as she hosted the very first “African Icons” Tribute Concert in Durban on 24 September. The event celebrated the life and legacy of the late Joseph Shabalala, founder of the legendary Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and was led by Grammy Award-winning producer and cultural icon Lebo M.

Reflecting on the experience, Minnie shared, “Hosting the African Icons tribute concert in honour of uBab’ Joseph Shabalala, at the historic @durbanplayhouse on #HeritageDay, felt like a full-circle moment. To stand on that stage I’ve always admired from the audience as a child, surrounded by world-class artists and the spirit of our culture, was nothing short of magical.

Today also marks six years since I lost my brother, an accomplished musician in his own right. Posting this memory feels even more special because I know it’s one we would have shared together. From our childhood filled with performing and our deep love for the performing arts, his spirit was right there with me. Grateful to @thereallebo_m for creating this beautiful celebration of our heritage, and to every artist who carried the legacy of our icon with such heart. The audience was pure love and joy, Ngiyanithanda. So blessed to still do what I love.”

In another Instagram post, Minnie reflected on performing in her hometown, saying, “I get to MC in my hometown tonight at the iconic @durbanplayhouse I grew up watching plays, concerts and shows there. I auditioned for my first musical theatre production and got it. I used to sit in the audience and dream of owning that stage one day, and today is the day. So many memories and a huge honour to celebrate this heritage day at home. Tonight we celebrate the late great Bab Joseph Shabalala at the African Icons Tribute Concert.”

The event, titled “Honouring Joseph Shabalala,” created a lasting platform celebrating the legendary musician’s influence and preserving African heritage.

Fans were treated to unforgettable performances from some of South Africa’s biggest names, including Big Zulu, Khuzani, Blaq Diamond, Sjava, Boity Thulo, Mnqobi Yazo, Naima Kay, Thee Legacy, and Nkosinathi Shabalala. With Minnie Dlamini at the helm, the concert was a heartfelt celebration of culture, music, and the enduring legacy of Joseph Shabalala.
