Today, 24 September 2025, South Africans are celebrating Heritage Day, one of the country’s most important public holidays. This day is all about honouring culture, traditions, and the diversity that makes South Africa unique. Every year, citizens are encouraged to proudly celebrate their roots, and this year, many South African celebrities shared their heritage through powerful messages and traditional attire.
Award-winning singer Makhadzi proudly celebrated her Venda heritage. She posted a video of herself getting dressed in traditional clothes and spoke about her upbringing. She explained how she grew up in a Venda household, cooking meals on firewood and dancing with her family and community. Alongside the video, she wrote a moving caption:
“HELLO SOUTH AFRICA. MY NAME IS MAKHADZI, A VENDA VILLAGE GIRL FROM HAMASHAMBA TSHIVHANGANI. GROWING UP IN THE VILLAGE NEVER LIMITED TO ACHIEVE MY DREAMS.. FROM A DUSTY ROAD OF HAMASHAMBA TSHIVHANGANI TO THE WORLD. SOUTH AFRICA HAPPY HERITAGE DAY..”
Her words inspired many fans as she reminded people that no matter where you come from, dreams are achievable.
Another proud moment came from Nomcebo Zikode, the Grammy Award-winning singer behind the global hit Jerusalema. Nomcebo showcased her stunning Xhosa attire and expressed the importance of unity. She captioned her post:
“Today I chose to represent the Xhosa culture with pride. We are all one people, let us celebrate each other! Happy Heritage Day! #Ubuntu #HeritageDay.”
Actress Hellen Motsuki shared a more emotional tribute. While celebrating her culture, she remembered her late mother. In a heartfelt message, she said:
“On Heritage Day, I’m reminded of you, Mom. I wish you were here to share lunch with me. I miss you so much, Mommy. I miss your #food. Sending you heavenly hugs.”
Meanwhile, reality TV star and DJ Gogo Skhotheni marked the day in a breathtaking custom-made Ndebele-inspired dress by Masango. She proudly wrote:
“Here’s to honouring the past, embracing the present, and creating a legacy for the future. The beauty of being iNdlovukazi isiKhethu isiNdebele…”
Adding to the vibrant celebrations, actress and Miss South Africa 2025 Top 10 contestant Luyanda Zuma represented her Zulu heritage. Dressed in traditional wear, she expressed her pride in her culture with these words:
“Heritage Day OOTD. Happy Heritage Day, South Africa! As a proud Zulu, I celebrate our rich cultural heritage and the diversity that makes our nation so vibrant. Ngiyabonga for the traditions, customs, and values that shape who we are. Let’s honor our past, celebrate our present, and build a brighter future together! Sawubona, my fellow South Africans!”
Heritage Day 2025 has once again reminded South Africans of the beauty of unity in diversity.
