South African rapper Da Les has officially confirmed that he is moving back to the United States following a major health scare last year. The hip-hop star, whose real name is Leslie Mampe Jr., was born in Washington, D.C., to South African parents and is now returning to his roots in the US.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Da L.E.S Network, the rapper shared: “We’re moving to Houston, Texas. I’m going out there to spend some time with my family in the States, but don’t worry SA, I’ll be back.”

The announcement video featured moments from what appeared to be a farewell party, where family, childhood friends, and music industry peers gathered to celebrate him. Fellow rapper-turned-podcaster L-Tido was among those present and gave an emotional message:

“I know when you come back, everything is gonna be good. You know we got you, we love you. We got your back forever.”

This big move comes after a life-threatening experience. In July 2024, on his 39th birthday, Da Les suffered a stroke that abruptly ended his birthday celebrations planned at Rosebank nightclub, Louis. His family quickly released a short statement confirming that he was in stable condition but remained silent afterward.

It was only in June 2025 that Da Les finally opened up about what happened. In a heartfelt video posted on his channel, he revealed his recovery journey, including a month-long hospital stay and ongoing rehabilitation. This was his first public appearance since the stroke.

In the emotional video, he admitted: “I suffered a stroke. People thought I was going to die. I made it. I think right now, it’s just to motivate people. People want to know what’s wrong with me. I want to help people because shit is real; it can happen to anybody.”

He went on to reflect on how quickly life can change: “One minute, you’re cool; you’re like me; next minute, you experience the worst. I feel like my life has changed, but it ain’t the end. This is bigger – I have to do this in my life. I just want to document my life.”

Da Les admitted that surviving a stroke is beyond anyone’s control, but he is grateful for a second chance at life.

“I’m just lucky to be alive. Shout out to all the people that came out. I feel good. I feel happy that I’m still here, but the whole purpose of me filming is to let y’all into my life in a real way, I think, and also just to inspire.”
