South Africa is getting ready to say a final goodbye to one of its most beloved actresses, Nandi Nyembe. Known to many as Mam’Nandi, the legendary star passed away on August 23, 2025, at the age of 75. Her death marks the end of a brilliant career that spanned over 50 years in the entertainment industry.
Her family and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture confirmed the news in a heartfelt joint statement. Minister Gayton McKenzie also joined the Nyembe family in mourning the loss of this national treasure.
“It is with profound sorrow that the Nyembe family, together with the national Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, announce the passing of one of South Africa’s most treasured icons of the arts, Mam’ Nandi Nyembe,” the statement read.
To honour her life and legacy, a memorial service will take place at the Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg. The service is set for Thursday, August 28, 2025, and will begin at 11:00 AM. The venue is fitting, as the Market Theatre has long been a symbol of South African art and performance — something Nyembe deeply represented.
Her funeral is scheduled for Saturday, August 30, although the exact location has not yet been confirmed.
Speaking to Daily Sun, her grandson, Njabulo, shared how the family is holding up during this difficult time.
“The family is taking it day by day. We’re spending as much time together as possible even though it comes with many ups and downs. But through everything, we remain level-headed to make sure we complete the process,” he said.
Njabulo also mentioned that they are working closely with the government to organise everything.
“As you saw in the statement we released with the department, we are in contact with them about everything and working together behind the scenes,” he explained.
Fans, fellow actors, and industry leaders have taken to social media to share heartfelt tributes, celebrating her life and remembering the unforgettable roles she brought to the screen and stage. Her influence on the entertainment industry is lasting and will never be forgotten.
