South African actress and activist Lunathi Mampofu is using her voice and platform to stand up against gender-based violence by launching her own women’s empowerment initiative, My Defense. Known for her powerful role as Zoleka Bikitsha on Mzansi Magic’s hit show Inimba, Mampofu is now stepping off the screen to make a real impact in the lives of South African women and children.

This past weekend, Mampofu hosted a self-defence workshop in Sandton at Ringside Fitness. The event was designed to equip women and young girls with the tools they need to protect themselves against abuse and violence — a growing concern across the country.

“I founded this initiative out of both pain and purpose,” Mampofu shared in an interview with The Citizen. “Growing up in South Africa, I’ve witnessed firsthand how unsafe our communities can be for women and young girls. I’ve lived through moments of fear, where simply getting into a car or walking down the street felt like a risk.”

The My Defense initiative is more than just learning how to physically defend oneself — it’s also about building inner strength and restoring the confidence, dignity, and freedom many women have lost due to violence and fear.

Mampofu explained that her work on Inimba helped her realise the power of storytelling in shedding light on real-life issues. But this Women’s Month, she felt called to do more than just portray struggle on screen — she wanted to act in real life too.

She created a space where women could come together, heal, and learn how to reclaim their strength and power. Through My Defense, Mampofu is transforming her personal experiences into tools of empowerment for others.

“With My Defense, I’m saying: enough. We are no longer waiting for someone else to protect us. We are protecting ourselves. It’s about reclaiming our power, our safety, and our right to live boldly without fear,” she said.

As South Africa continues to battle gender-based violence, voices like Mampofu’s bring hope and strength. Her work proves that change begins with action — and that women can lead the charge toward a safer, more empowered future.
