The 2025 MTV VMAs will take place on Sunday, September 7, and Tyla’s fans around the world are already buzzing with excitement.
“Push 2 Start” has dominated charts, dancefloors, and social media trends globally, thanks to its infectious beat and captivating choreography. The track, which appears on the deluxe version of her self-titled debut album “Tyla +”, was released in November 2024 and quickly became a fan favourite.
Blending amapiano, pop, R&B, and reggae, the song uses car metaphors to explore themes of attraction and commitment. Its music video, which Tyla co-directed alongside Taylor Fauntleroy, embraces a nostalgic Y2K aesthetic, featuring a bold car wash setting that has drawn comparisons to iconic videos like Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love” and Rihanna’s “Shut Up and Drive.”
The visual’s throwback vibe, complete with coordinated dance routines and early 2000s-inspired colour schemes, helped propel the track to viral success. The video currently boasts over 102 million views on YouTube, and its popularity soared even further after a remix featuring dancehall legend Sean Paul was released.
Critics and fans alike have praised Tyla for her ability to merge dynamic choreography with lyrics and beats that transcend genres. “Push 2 Start” made history by peaking at number 88 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, marking Tyla’s second solo entry on the chart as a female African artist. It also topped the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart and the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart.
The track’s success doesn’t stop there. It has earned multiple certifications worldwide—platinum in Brazil and New Zealand, gold in Canada, Greece, and the U.S., and silver in the U.K.
With these MTV VMA nominations, Tyla continues to prove why she’s one of the most exciting artists on the global stage. Fans will be watching closely on September 7 to see if she takes home the coveted awards.
