Black Gold is a bold new drama series that places African storytelling at the forefront, weaving together themes of identity, legacy, and resilience. Rich in culture and driven by a dynamic cast, the series explores the emotional and societal complexities of communities shaped by power, survival, and betrayal.
“Black Gold is a celebration of African storytelling at its finest—deeply rooted in culture, layered with emotion, and brought to life by an exceptional cast,” said Monde Twala, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Paramount Africa, and Lead for BET International. “At BET Africa, we remain committed to showcasing stories that reflect the strength, beauty, and depth of Black lives. This series is a tribute to Black resilience, Black love, and the enduring spirit of our communities.”
Mandla N, Executive Director at Black Brain Pictures, described the project as a transformative experience for the creators as much as it will be for the audience. “Creating Black Gold was a game-changer. It challenged us, moved us, and pushed us creatively. Working with BET on this co-production is about more than just producing a show—it’s a long-term investment in the local industry. It’s about breaking boundaries and championing stories that matter. Black Gold is raw, emotional, and unapologetically real.”
At the heart of the series is Nomalanga Shozi, a well-known face on BET, who takes on the lead role of Amandla—a woman thrust into the dangerous world of illegal mining. As Amandla fights to reclaim her legacy, she must confront a powerful enemy: the very woman who took everything from her.
The series also makes a strong statement about the power of women in spaces often dominated by men. From Amandla’s revolutionary rise to Florence’s ruthless command of the mining world, Black Gold explores the strength, complexity, and agency of women navigating high-stakes environments. It’s a timely portrayal of modern African womanhood and leadership.
At its core, Black Gold is a gripping saga of family, justice, and ambition. It’s a story where every betrayal leaves a mark, and every decision carries weight. With its rich narrative and emotional depth, the series is set to become one of the standout offerings on BET Africa.
Black Gold premieres on BET (DStv Channel 129) on 18 August and will air Monday to Thursday at 18:30.
