katch it with khanyi

Truth be told the Hip Hop industry has always been a male dominated kingdom and we really doubt that it will change any time soon.

It’s really interesting to see that South African females are out there trying to make it and fill the gap in the Hip Hop space.

Nadia Nakai is one of the most successful female MC’s in South Africa and we’re only saying this because she’s not a one hit wonder, another female MC that recently joined Nadia in the game is Nomuzi Mabena. We all knew Nomuzi as an MTV VJ and nothing more, until we saw her hanging with Hip Hop group CashTime and well now the rest is history.

These two rap queens were recently featured on Katch it with Khanyi Mbau to speak about how they made it into the industry and all the struggles they faced before their careers were taken seriously.

Speaking to Khanyi, Nomuzi stressed that she didn’t get signed to CashTime for being cool and relevant in the media industry, she actually had to work hard to ‘secure’ her spot on the team. She also opened up on how she found her love for rap music and why she decided that she wants to be a part of the game.

“I work for MTV, so being around that type of environment for two years just got me so into music and the business side of music but then I also realised that it wasn’t going to work if I just approached K.O on some ‘Yo, I’ve got the swag you’ve got the rhymes let’s do this.’

The music had to be authentic, so I had to go through months of artist development and training, only last year in November was I signed to Cashtime, but even then I still had to wait because I needed to make sure that the music I put out is good music and not just cheesy music because I was coming into hip hop and it’s hard because people are out here making really good music.”

Well there you have it just like Rome wasn’t built in a day, Nomuzi didn’t wake as a part of CashTime, the girl worked hard for her place and we honestly can’t wait for her album to come out!
