The South African entertainment scene was set ablaze when Amapiano star and hip-hop veteran Sizwe Alakine, popularly known as Reason, made a dramatic and unexpected appearance on the Piano Pulse Podcast. His mission? To call out the podcast hosts for their controversial comments about his relationship with rapper Gigi Lamayne.
The heated moment stemmed from a recent episode of Piano Pulse, where co-host Thakgi made remarks comparing Reason’s past relationship with media personality Lootlove to his current romance with Gigi Lamayne. Thakgi suggested that Reason had “downgraded,” a statement that didn’t sit well with the rapper.
Not one to let such comments slide, Reason stormed the podcast studio, ready to confront the hosts head-on and the conversation quickly turned into a tense exchange.
“So how did you quantify that my current girlfriend is a downgrade from my ex?” Reason questioned, his tone calm but firm.
He didn’t stop there. He challenged the logic behind such comparisons, calling out the problematic nature of ranking women based on public perception. “What downgrade? What gives you the right to sit down and discuss another man’s relationship? What are you teaching these kids here? That oh yeah, if you’re a girl that looks like Gigi in the public perception, you’re a downgrade compared to a girl that looks like Luthando in the public perception?”
Despite Reason’s passionate response, Thakgi remained firm in his stance, defending his remarks as simply a reflection of what the public believes. “It was in comparison with what’s in the media and what we’ve seen,” Thakgi argued.
But Reason wasn’t convinced. He fired back with a pointed question, urging Thakgi to move beyond public perception and rely on his own judgment. “Luthando works for the radio, Gigi doesn’t work for anybody, so forget about the public knowledge—let’s talk about your knowledge,” Reason stated.
With the conversation growing more intense, he made his purpose clear, “You’re trying to justify ish that has no basis. I didn’t come here to have a conversation. I came here to rectify you.”
The confrontation quickly went viral on X (formerly Twitter), with fans and entertainment lovers weighing in on the debate. Many applauded Reason for standing up for both Gigi and Lootlove, while others defended Thakgi’s right to have an opinion.
@BassieKayy supported Reason’s stance, tweeting, “I think he did right. There’s a point where he talks about how kids are watching the pod and how impressionable they are. These guys’ opinions shape how their viewers see women. Stop comparing women based on looks like they’re iPhones.”
Meanwhile, @BassieBuzzing had harsh words for Thakgi: “Thakgi is just another bum with a platform. What he is trying to justify is nonsense. I don’t think Reason would be this angry if Gigi’s feelings weren’t hurt.”
On the other hand, @ManimoDj felt Reason was taking things too personally: “As much as it was wrong for them to use the word ‘downgrade,’ we shouldn’t forget that they are public figures. Everyone has an opinion on their relationship. Reason shouldn’t be catching feelings—it’s not that deep.”
However, @SavvyMav3rick praised Reason for standing up against disrespect: “In an industry where people often stay silent to avoid controversy, Sizwe Alakine (Reason) did what real men should do—he stood up and defended his woman. He called them out, and for that, he deserves his flowers.”
