South African actress Buntu Petse has joined the nation in mourning the loss of beloved comedian and actor Ebenhaezer Dibakwane, who passed away on March 7, 2025, at the age of 31.
Taking to social media, Buntu shared heartfelt words and cherished memories of her late friend. Alongside touching photos and videos of their time together, she wrote:
“Ebz Bra, Kubuhlungu (It’s painful). We’ve lost an angelic force for real! Your insistence on injecting any and every moment with humour made working with you such a special experience. From deep chats in Uber rides, script ideas that never made it to pen and paper, and shots galore at any spot that would have us, you will be bitter-sweetly remembered/missed. I pray you are at peace after having lived a short yet such a colourful life. Usebenzile Dibakwane (You worked hard).. And for that, I’m forever grateful to have known you. Rest Easy King.”
In her tribute, Buntu also shared a clip featuring herself, Ebenhaezer, and fellow actor Mpho Sebeng, who tragically lost his life in a car accident on May 5, 2024. The post carried even greater sorrow, as it highlighted the heartbreaking loss of two gifted young actors within a year, leaving the South African entertainment industry in deep mourning.
Ebenhaezer’s manager, Tabitha Hoy, confirmed the news to News24 but did not disclose the cause of death. In a statement, she described him as a friend to many, known for his “off-the-wall humour, original style of stand-up comedy, and the joy he brought to audiences across South Africa.”
His agency, Pickledginger Entertainment, also paid tribute, calling him a “celebrated comedian, actor, and writer.” They highlighted his unique comedic voice, infectious energy, and the deep impact he had on the industry.
Ebenhaezer rose to fame in 2016 when he won the Savanna Comics’ Choice Award for Newcomer of the Year, followed by another win in 2017 in the Intermediate category. By 2018, he was nominated for Breakthrough Comedian of the Year, cementing his status as one of South Africa’s brightest comedic talents.
Beyond stand-up, he showcased his versatility in acting, starring in Catching Feelings, MTV Shuga Down South, and even competing on Dancing with the Stars South Africa.
