The 2024 Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and TV Awards, held at Durban’s iconic Playhouse on Saturday, July 20, was a night of heartfelt tributes and grand celebrations. The event paid homage to the late Dr. Mbongeni Ngema, Mpho Sebeng, and other luminaries whose contributions have indelibly marked the South African TV and film industry. Nomalanga Shozi’s stellar hosting kept the audience captivated throughout the evening.
The late Dr. Mbongeni Ngema, renowned playwright, lyricist, composer, director, choreographer, and theatre producer, who passed away in December, was remembered fondly. His legacy continues to inspire generations of artists. Likewise, the late Mpho Sebeng, known for his roles in “Ring of Lies” and “Savage Beauty,” who passed in May, was honoured for his impactful work.
The evening was also a celebration of contemporary talent and achievements. ThembiNkosi Mthembu took home the award for Best Actor in TV for his outstanding performance in “Shaka ilembe.” Cynthia Shange, a revered figure in the industry, was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award, acknowledging her extensive contributions to South African television and film.
Deli Malinga’s powerful portrayal in “Umkhokha- The Curse” earned her the Best Actress in TV award, while “A Queen’s Lobola” was named Best Feature Film. Slindile Nodangala’s performance in “Outlaws” won her the Best Supporting Actress award, and Melusi Yeni was recognised as Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Sibongile and The Dlaminis.” Rising star Ziya Xulu was awarded Best Newcomer Actress, highlighting her promising career ahead.
The event attracted some of the biggest names in the industry. Dawn Thandeka King, Lerato Mvelase, and Kwenzo Ngcobo were among the stars who graced the red carpet, adding to the glamour of the evening.
The Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and TV Awards not only celebrated the achievements of the past year but also underscored the enduring impact of those who have departed, ensuring their legacies live on in the hearts and minds of many.
