For seasoned actress Zenande Mfenyane, acting is more than just a career — it is a God-given talent that she embraces with her whole heart. With a career that spans over two decades, the award-winning actress continues to prove why she remains one of South Africa’s most respected performers. Currently starring as Thumeka on Mzansi Magic’s popular telenovela Inimba, Zenande has once again captured the attention of viewers across the country.

As Thumeka, Zenande has become the firecracker lighting up television screens every weeknight. Her powerful and emotional performance keeps millions of viewers glued to their screens, and her portrayal has sparked strong reactions on social media. Fans regularly shower her with praise, paying tribute to the depth and honesty she brings to the character.

Speaking to DRUM, the actress opened up about her journey, her dedication to her craft and her excitement as Inimba prepares to return for season two. She shared that what draws her most to Thumeka is the character’s quiet strength and resilience, despite being constantly overlooked.

Although Thumeka is often treated poorly and even slammed by a man in her life, Zenande describes her as an underdog who is rarely seen. “She is like a Cinderella, who never gets called to come greet visitors, she’s the underdog, who is always on the back burner,” she says. “I love that aspect about her, she holds her own.”

Her convincing portrayal has led to an outpouring of messages from viewers who see themselves in Thumeka’s story. Zenande revealed that she often receives direct messages from fans saying they relate deeply to the character. “To know that in some way the character touches people, who relate to her, is amazing, because people often say that they either are the character or that they know someone who is.”

She also admits that delivering such emotionally charged scenes requires serious preparation. “Even before the script comes, I prepare with my fellow actors, and so we don’t shoot in sequence, so being prepared all the time is important and being in sync with other actors is just as important,” she explains.

Zenande credits her longevity in the industry to discipline and staying focused on her craft rather than fame. “It’s about discipline, taking my craft seriously and not chasing fame, because that is a byproduct of what we do as actors,” she says. “It’s also about being able to take constructive criticism well and sifting through it to ascertain what to take and what to discard.”

As Inimba gears up for its highly anticipated second season, Zenande hints that viewers should brace themselves for an intense ride. While she remains tight-lipped about what lies ahead, she confirms that Thumeka will be right at the centre of the drama. “I’m unable to talk about what happens in season two,” she adds.

She also noted that Thumeka is unlike any character she has played before. “This is very different from the roles I’ve played before, usually rich.”

To aspiring actors, Zenande offers words of wisdom rooted in faith and discipline. “It’s important to know that if acting is what God’s called you to do, it will happen, and nobody can stop that from happening. Pursue the industry for the right reasons,” she concludes.
