The pressure is building on Tropika Island of Treasure, and host Zanele Potelwa has hinted that viewers are in for more unexpected moments as the competition unfolds on Réunion Island.

With R1 million up for grabs, the celebrities and their Smooth Fan partners are facing more than just physical and mental challenges. The competition is also testing their determination, relationships and ability to handle uncertainty as they fight to secure the winning spot.

According to The Citizen, for Potelwa, however, the emotional side of the show has been just as fascinating as the challenges themselves. The host revealed that watching the contestants invest so much of themselves in the experience has been one of the biggest surprises of the season.

“The most surprising thing for me has been seeing how much our cast has poured themselves into the game. There are lots of tears and lots of tenacity shown, but most importantly, there’s lots of heart,” she said.

Beyond the competitive spirit, Potelwa has also noticed the affection developing between the participants. Despite the pressure to win, the bonds they are forming have stood out to her.

“You can see everyone giving their everything and the amount of love they have for each other is beautiful to witness,” she said.

The R1 million prize also means something different to each contestant. Potelwa explained that understanding their individual motivations has made it easier for her to connect with their emotions when the stakes are high.

“I think I find myself feeling most empathetic in those moments because they all really want it,” she said.

“They all want it for different reasons, whether you’re the graduate who needs a jump-start for your life or the athlete who only knows how to win, they all really want that top spot.”

Having experienced competition herself, Potelwa understands why the contestants sometimes struggle with the uncertainty of what comes next. She pointed out that unexpected developments can make an already demanding experience even more nerve-racking.

“I empathise with them because, as someone who’s been part of a competition, I know it’s incredibly nerve-racking when you don’t know how something is going to play out, especially when there are spanners in the works, like the mystery boxes or unexpected twists and turns.”

And if viewers think they have figured out what to expect, Potelwa has a warning: the surprises are far from over.

“It’s Tropika Island of Treasure, which has always been unpredictable,” she said.

“I still have many tricks and surprises up my sleeve, and you’ll have to watch to find out, but I can tell you, it’s so worth it,” she added.

With alliances growing stronger and the pressure mounting, the remaining challenges could change the course of the competition. For viewers, the combination of emotional moments, unexpected twists and the fight for the R1 million prize promises plenty more drama before the season reaches its conclusion.
