The South African media industry is preparing to bid a heartfelt farewell to Ukhozi FM broadcaster and businesswoman, Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, who passed away earlier this week after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Known affectionately as MaZet, Mbokazi-Nkambule’s life and legacy will be honored in a series of services that reflect her impact on the broadcasting and gospel music scenes.
Reported by ZiMoja, her funeral service will take place this Saturday, 17 August, at the ICC in Durban, starting at 9 a.m. The ICC holds a special significance, as it was the very venue where Zanele organized the inaugural SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards in 2008, an event that has since become a cornerstone of South Africa’s gospel music industry. Following the service, Zanele will be laid to rest at her final resting place in Marianhill, Pinetown.
Before her burial, a memorial service will be held tomorrow at the GNF near Durban Station, beginning at 12 p.m. The service is expected to draw a large crowd, including industry colleagues, politicians, business leaders, and fans, all coming together to celebrate the life of a woman who touched so many through her work.
Zanele’s journey with Ukhozi FM began in 1995 when she was among the young presenters recruited by the late station manager, Welcome “Bhodloza” Nzimande. She quickly became a beloved figure, presenting a popular gospel show before venturing into business. In April of last year, she returned to the station, where she continued to inspire listeners with her passion for gospel music until her passing on Monday.
Reflecting on her impact, Ukhozi FM Business Manager, Sbongi Ngcobo, remarked, “Throughout her tenure, Zanele was an integral part of the Ukhozi FM family, spreading love, hope, and inspiration to countless listeners through her uplifting gospel show. Her passion for sharing the message of faith and her infectious enthusiasm touched hearts and transformed lives.”
The SABC’s Acting Group Executive for Video Entertainment, Lala Tuku, also paid tribute, saying, “The SABC will always cherish its partnership with Ms. Mbokazi-Nkambule for the Crown Gospel Music Awards, as they shone a light on a much-loved music genre in the country. Her passion for the development of the music industry was commendable.”
Zanele is survived by her husband, Bishop Nkambule, whom she married in 2011 after meeting at a church service in eSwatini. She also leaves behind two daughters, actress Yolanda Myeza and film editor Mawande Myeza, who now carry forward the legacy of a woman who was truly a beacon of inspiration in the South African media landscape.
