South African music legend Yvonne Chaka Chaka is celebrating six years of using broadcasting to empower women and create opportunities for female voices in the media industry.

Since launching WOMan Radio in 2020, the musician has helped empower more than 60 women through the digital radio station, which was established to give women a platform to share their stories, experiences and perspectives.

On Tuesday, 20 October, Yvonne reflected on the station’s journey, marking six years since it first went live on 20 October 2020. She also shared a post featuring the women who are part of the station, recognising the people who have contributed to its growth over the years.

The idea behind WOMan Radio came from Yvonne’s work advocating for women’s empowerment across South Africa. Through her travels, she realised that there was a need for a platform that could reach more people and make important information accessible to a wider audience.

Reflecting on the vision that inspired the station, Yvonne explained that not everyone believed the idea would succeed.

“When I started WoMan Radio six years ago, I had been travelling across the country doing women’s empowerment work. I realised we needed a way to disseminate information and do it on a bigger scale, and radio was the answer. Many people told me online radio wouldn’t work in South Africa – data costs are too high, streaming is difficult, traditional radio dominates. But I knew our women needed a platform of their own, where they could tell their own stories. By women, for women, without permission or gatekeepers.

“Six years later, we are still here, growing stronger, and proving that when content is authentic, empowering, and speaks to the soul, our people will always find a way to listen. Thank you to every team member, presenter, and faithful listener who has tuned in and walked this journey with us. Here is to six years of breaking barriers, amplifying female voices, and taking African stories to the world!”

WOMan Radio continues to focus on creating an environment where women’s voices can be heard, celebrated and preserved. The digital station uses engaging content, meaningful conversations and empowering programmes to promote gender equality and encourage positive change across Africa and beyond.

With more than 60,000 monthly listeners, the station has built an audience around its mission of sharing women’s stories and highlighting issues that matter to them.

As WOMan Radio celebrates this milestone, Yvonne’s initiative stands as a reminder of the importance of creating opportunities for women in broadcasting. What began as an idea inspired by her advocacy work has grown into a platform that continues to connect listeners with African stories while giving women the opportunity to speak in their own voices.
