Miss South Africa 2024, Mia Le Roux, recently announced her engagement to her partner, Luke Tenoever, and shared the touching story of how their love began. Just two days after the exciting news, Mia opened up about how they met and what made their connection so special.
She began by saying, “With Luke, there’s always a story.” And the way they met really is something out of a fairytale.
Mia shared that they first met on an apple farm, surrounded by orchards, while celebrating New Year’s with friends. One of her close friends had opened her home for the group, and Luke and his friend were also invited.
“When I arrived, I saw Luke, a little bit shy initially. But soon we found ourselves in deep conversation, the kind where everything just makes sense. He understood me, and I understood him. It was easy and effortless,” she said.
As midnight approached, the group made their way to a nearby dam to jump in and welcome the new year. Although Mia wore a hearing aid, she decided to keep it in, hoping it wouldn’t get wet. But when she jumped into the water, her head went under, and the hearing aid stopped working.
Mia felt suddenly vulnerable and walked back to the house alone to try to fix it. That’s when Luke noticed something was wrong.
“He came over and gently asked what was wrong. I explained, and without hesitation, he offered to walk me back,” she said.
The walk back wasn’t easy — they had to go through a dark forest, and Mia couldn’t hear anything. She felt embarrassed and kept apologising, thinking Luke might feel uncomfortable.
Then, something beautiful happened. “Then he stopped walking, took a step back, looked at me, and signed: ‘You are beautiful’,” Mia recalled.
In that quiet moment, Mia said something shifted inside her. “I understood that kindness and acceptance are real. That they can find you even in the most unexpected moments,” she said.
Mia reflected on how that one moment showed her that her hearing loss was nothing to be ashamed of — it’s simply part of who she is. She also reminded others that even if not everyone understands your journey, true kindness and compassion can still reach you.
“That kind of kindness? It stays with you,” Mia said warmly.
