Former Generations star Wright Ngubeni is back on South African television, joining the popular e.tv drama Scandal! as Botsotso, a former football player. At 36, Wright has been busy hosting shows like Umkhonto Ogwaza Ekhaya, Big Up, and Love Back, but it’s been a while since we’ve seen him act in local dramas.
Speaking to Daily Sun, Wright shared his excitement about returning to acting:
“I’ve been doing a lot of acting. I’ve never stopped. I just haven’t been doing a lot of local television. I’ve been doing my own productions. I’m a director and producer.”
He also mentioned his work behind the scenes:
“I’m a media practitioner, and I’m a businessman too, so it’s all about opportunities for me to upgrade myself and liberate myself to be able to impart skill and influence a new generation. That’s just always been my theme.”
Wright is thrilled to be back on screen for his fans:
“Coming back to the screens excites me a lot. I’m more excited for my supporters, people who’ve been following me for years and people who are inspired by what I do. If I’m not doing it for them, who am I doing it for? My fulfilment comes from doing what I do best with my God-given talent and sharing it with people.”
His character, Botsotso, is a former soccer star who played internationally but didn’t manage his career well. Wright describes him as:
“An ex-football star who made it to play abroad like many stars who start from humble beginnings here in Mzansi and go abroad. However, Botsotso didn’t look after his blessing and his talents. He didn’t look after a lot of things.”
Botsotso’s struggles include behavioral issues and the pitfalls of fame and money:
“He messed up quite a few things, including behavioural issues. I guess it must’ve been fame, money and he got caught up in that life. He hit rock bottom, but he still has this thing in his head that he would make it back and he still has a chance to make it back. However, by the way things are looking right now, it’s not promising. He’s battling to deal with reality.”
Wright’s return is part of Scandal!’s introduction of new characters and storylines. According to Daily Sun, other new cast members include Bongani Gumede as Ephraim, Khutjo Green as Kedibone, Danny De Bruyne as De Wet, and Botlhale Baitsiwe as Tshidi.
Fans can watch Wright’s debut as Botsotso on Scandal! and follow his journey as he brings this complex character to life.
