Watch! Pearl Thusi Reveals Why She Hated The ‘IT’ Girl Era.The model and actress recently revealed on the ‘Black Rose Kitchen’ episode on YouTube about the downsides of the entertainment industry. Many female celebrities in South Africa have always felt that they were pit against each other to compete and be rivals.
Speaking to Moozlie as a host on the show, Pearl said that she despised the ‘IT’ girl era because she was constantly reminded of always having to follow a specific guideline for media portrayals. The way they dressed, spoke and so on as there was enormous pressure exerted on them to always fit into a certain mold. “I actually hate that IT Girl era. You were so cool to me and you were not subscribing to that thing. There was a new age of stars that came along and they didn’t subscribe to it. I feel like myself, Minnie, Bonang, maybe even Zinhle — a lot of people — were just forced into this thing and we just wanted to be famous and be recognised for what we do,” she said.
Pearl also said that she feels like that period robbed her of her individuality as it was devoid of doing certain things that were fulfilling to her as she constantly had to conceal herself. “It hid a lot of parts of me that I wanted to show that I would have my management say you can’t show that, you will lose this client, and now it’s completely switched to, be yourself and I’m like, you guys played us, I feel so played,” Thusi said.
Having started off as a presenter she has also gone to being an actress, back in 2020 she starred in ‘Queen Sono’, a crime drama series that had her as the leading actor in it. She portrayed the role of a spy Queen Sono who was always on a mission to get her job done.
