‘I Wanted To Be White,’ Nandi Madida On Growing Up A ‘Coconut’! Nandi has been open about growing up well off, being one of the first kinds in her town to go to a white school and how that helped her. Now the star has shared the downside of what most aspire to.

Whilst talking to Anele  Mdoda on ‘Real Talk With Anele’, Nandi revealed she wanted to be white like her friend when she was younger.

“I was the biggest coconut in primary school. I wanted to be white like a friend of mine called Cassie. She was blonde and blue eyed and I wished to be like her,” Nandi said.

Thanks to her sister and mother,  Nandi learnt to love herself and the skin she was born in. “It was my sister  and  my mom who inspired me to love who I am and the skin I am in.”

Now she is one of the most inspiring black women on the continent who inspire young girls to love being all things African.
