56 years after the first Volvo tackled Sani Pass, the all-electric EX30 Cross Country has proven that EVs can handle South Africa’s toughest terrain—powered entirely by the country’s highest solar-powered charger.
A first for South Africa: The EX30 Cross Country has become the first fully electric vehicle to successfully climb Sani Pass, one of the nation’s most iconic and challenging mountain routes. Stretching through the breathtaking Drakensberg Mountains, Sani Pass has long tested a vehicle’s power, control, and endurance. Now, electric mobility has officially joined the list of conquerors.
Sani Pass: steeped in history: Long before engines roared, Basotho shepherds traversed these twisting, narrow trails to trade livestock and goods, navigating the mountains with courage and determination. In 1969, Volvo made its first ascent, proving its engineering mettle. Fast forward 56 years, and the EX30 Cross Country repeats the feat—this time running entirely on electricity, showcasing just how far automotive innovation has come.

Small but mighty: Don’t be fooled by its compact size. The EX30 Cross Country packs 315 kW of electric power and a rugged design built to handle city streets and demanding mountain passes. During the climb, it took on steep gradients, hairpin bends, and rocky terrain with poise, proving that adventure and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Powered by the sun: Adding to the milestone is South Africa’s highest solar-powered EV charger, installed by CHARGE at Premier Resort Sani Pass at 1,566 metres. This charger enabled a fully solar-to-solar journey, demonstrating that even remote adventures can be powered sustainably.
“The ascent of Sani Pass by the EX30 Cross Country is a defining moment for electric mobility in South Africa,” says Grant Locke, Managing Director of Volvo Car SA. “It shows that EVs can handle the most challenging terrain, and that clean energy can fuel adventure in the most remote locations.”

Looking back and forward: Sani Pass has always been a proving ground—from Willys Jeep ascents to modern performance trials. The EX30 Cross Country now joins this legacy, bridging decades of motoring history while highlighting a cleaner, more adventurous future.
Joubert Roux, Founder of CHARGE, adds: “We’re proud to partner with Volvo and Premier Hotels & Resorts on this historic journey. Our solar-powered charger will be upgraded in Q2 2026 with battery backup, enabling overnight charging and making sustainable exploration even more possible.”

Volvo’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and adventure continues to push boundaries, proving that owning an EV doesn’t limit exploration—it redefines it.
