Our favorite girl next door Unathi Msengana is no stranger to controversy and has found herself in hot water a few times. The singer and Idols judge is finally opening up about the time she got suspended on Metro FM which had her making headlines and trends across Mzansi. Unathi reflects on almost losing her Metro FM job.
The suspension had come after Unathi’s twitter war with a listener on comments she made on air about Stellenbosch University students being taught in Afrikaans. It went down in the DM and the listener made the messages public. This led to the singer’s six weeks suspension with no pay.
Speaking to Drum, Unathi says it was the birth if her song “Sonini” with DJ Merlon. “I had just been suspended from work for six weeks with no pay and I didn’t know if I was going to lose my job or get it back,” she said.
Unathi told the mag she was surprised to learn that there were people celebrating her suspension. “I was hurt that people could celebrate such a thing simply because I stood up for my family. My family had nothing to do with my comments but they were attacked.”
