South African superstar Tyla shone brightly at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) on Sunday, November 10, capturing three prestigious awards: Best Afrobeats, Best R&B, and Best African Act. Held at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena, the 30th-anniversary event marked a vibrant return for the EMAs.
In an unforgettable fashion statement, Tyla stepped onto the stage in a vintage Roberto Cavalli Fall 2000 gown—a zebra-print, blue-and-black satin chiffon dress with a cowl neck, high slit, and fur-trimmed hem. Her gown paid homage to the late Aaliyah, who famously wore the same design in golden yellow at the 2000 MTV VMAs, where she won Best Female Music Video. Tyla completed her nostalgic look with Paris Texas Uma knee-high cut-out sandals and shimmering silver jewellery, embracing the iconic style with a modern twist.
Accepting her Best R&B award, Tyla dedicated her win to Aaliyah, expressing her admiration and connection to the late star. “I know it’s just so hard to categorise my music, like, I literally mix so many different genres into one, but R&B is a huge influence in my music, especially Aaliyah,” she shared emotionally. “She’s like one of my idols, so the fact that I’m even winning this in her dress, like oh my God. Thank you guys so much, and I’m gonna go now,” Tyla said, her voice filled with emotion.
The Johannesburg-born artist captivated the audience with a powerful performance of her hits, Water and Push 2 Start, showcasing her musical versatility. Later, while accepting her Best Afrobeats award, Tyla invited her sister, Sydney Seethal, on stage, celebrating the moment with family. “If you guys don’t know her, this is my sister, Sydney,” she introduced, drawing cheers from the crowd. Expressing her gratitude, Tyla said, “Afrobeats has opened so many doors for African music… I just want to thank my team, my family, the Tygers for voting for me, and thank God, obviously.” Her sister chimed in, saying, “Girl, I’m proud of you!”
Thank you Tygers once again! 🐅💕
