South African pop star Tyla has reflected on her incredible journey in her 20s, celebrating the experiences that have taken her from South Africa to the international stage. From winning Grammy Awards to making memorable fashion statements and performing at major global events, the singer has already achieved milestones many artists dream of.
Tyla recently took to her Instagram Story to share a humorous message about the achievements she hopes to tell her children about one day. Her post highlighted the exciting opportunities, unforgettable experiences and career highlights she has enjoyed since becoming a global music star.
Tyla wrote: “Me telling my kids one day that when I was in my 20s, I became a pop star, left Africa, travelled the world, wore sand to an event, got two Grammys, ‘Water’, performed with Victoria’s Secret angel wings, sang at the World Cup, had everyone and their mama doing Bacardi, did whatever I wanted, took over a theme park, went on stream, moved around with security. Lol, what? Do whatever will make 80-year-old you smirk.”
When Tyla mentions wearing sand to an event, she is referring to her appearance at the 2024 Met Gala in New York. The singer wore a custom Balmain gown made with sand and crystal details, inspired by the evening’s “The Garden of Time” dress code. Her striking look became one of the memorable fashion moments of the event.
Her reference to winning two Grammys celebrates her achievements at the prestigious music awards. Tyla won Best African Music Performance in 2024 for her global hit “Water” and received another Grammy in 2026 for “PUSH 2 START”.
The singer also recalls performing with Victoria’s Secret angel wings. On 15 October 2024, she appeared at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, performing “Water” and “PUSH 2 START” while wearing the show’s signature angel wings.
When Tyla mentions singing at the World Cup, she reflects on her involvement in the 2026 FIFA World Cup celebrations. She performed South Africa’s national anthem alongside the Mzansi Youth Choir during the opening ceremony in Mexico City. She was also featured with Future on “Game Time”, a track released as part of the official FIFA World Cup 2026 album.
Tyla’s reference to taking over a theme park relates to her special “A*POP” experience at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg in August 2026.
Her comment about having “everyone and their mama doing Bacardi” is a playful reference to the popularity of South African dance culture and the way her music has reached audiences around the world.
However, the most meaningful part of Tyla’s message comes at the end: “Do whatever will make 80 year old you smirk.”
Through these words, the singer encourages people to embrace opportunities, take chances and create memories they will look back on with a smile. By imagining herself at 80, Tyla reflects on how the experiences she enjoys today could become some of her favourite stories to tell in the future.
