In a tumultuous turn of events, the relationship between actress Letoya Makhene and her wife Lebohang Keswa has come to an end, marked by a series of allegations and deep-seated grievances. According to Sunday World, the unraveling of their union was laid bare in a series of candid letters, exposing the extent of their strife.
Keswa recounted the distressing series of events that led to the breakdown of their relationship. “Two weeks after Letoya cheated with a married man, I told her to leave my house. She came to your home in Tladi (Soweto), only to once again cheat with a lesbian woman from your area,” Keswa revealed.
The allegations do not stop at infidelity. Keswa disclosed instances of physical abuse at the hands of Makhene. “I have been physically assaulted by Letoya on three occasions, even burning me with hot water in the process,” she wrote. Despite consulting Makhene’s father, Blondie Makhene, who sought forgiveness on Letoya’s behalf, Keswa admitted to foolishly forgiving her and not taking legal action beyond filing reports.
The domestic violence extended to property damage as well. “Letoya has destroyed both the homes that we’ve lived in. Breaking windows and burning curtains at my grandmother’s home and breaking furniture at our home,” Keswa detailed.
Following these incidents, a medical professional recommended that Makhene seek treatment in a mental institution, diagnosing her as an alcoholic. However, Makhene refused to comply with the recommendation.
Keswa also expressed frustration over financial issues stemming from her marriage. She claimed that Makhene’s family misled her into paying lobola for Letoya, her mother, her children, and her ancestors, only to later discover that Letoya had not completed her sangoma initiation. This, Keswa stated, left her in significant financial strain.
“After much deliberation with my family, I took the decision that the differences are way too much (emotionally, financially, and physically draining and abusive). The differences are irreconcilable; therefore, I am dissolving the marriage,” Keswa concluded, requesting a written response and arranging for the collection of Makhene’s belongings.
In response, Makhene penned her own letter on April 9, acknowledging the end of their marriage. “It is with great sadness that I write this letter. My marriage to your daughter, my wife Lebohang Mahali Pulumo, has come to an end due to irreconcilable differences, and I think it’s for the best that she and I do not try to fix things,” Makhene wrote. She also requested assistance in retrieving her personal belongings left behind in their shared residence in Mohlakeng, Randfontein.
