Tumi Morake, the celebrated South African actress and comedian, is gearing up for a spectacular performance in the upcoming South Africa’s Best Comedy Experience show, scheduled for 22 September. Joining comedy heavyweights like Felix Hlophe, Skhumba, and Simphiwe Shembe, the 41-year-old comic is ready to bring her signature energy to the stage.
In an interview with TRUE LOVE, Tumi expressed her excitement, saying, “I’m excited to bring my energy and good vibes to the show. I do not rush into new material especially if it feels undercooked, so l try to keep it fresh by making sure I tweak it to the vibe of the audience in the room. Best way is to stay true to where I am at in that moment.”
Tumi’s approach to comedy is refreshingly inclusive. She doesn’t shy away from tackling any topic, as long as it resonates with her audience. “Funny enough, when a funny idea hits me, I don’t judge it. I guess I steer away from anything I don’t think anyone else will find funny or that only perpetuates discrimination against people,” she explained.
Morake’s groundbreaking career has seen her become the first woman in Africa to have her own Netflix special in 2018, and she continues to make waves with headline shows around the globe. Fresh off her win on Prime Video’s LOL: Last One Laughing hosted by Trevor Noah, and a successful Women’s Day live comedy show, Tumi remains as driven as ever.
“I am a playful person by nature, so l approach my projects as a new opportunity to play,” she revealed. “Aspiring female comedians should be chasing perfecting their craft, not recognition. The recognition comes naturally as you grow and put yourself out there.”
In addition to her comedy, Tumi is also making strides in film. With a busy year ahead, she teased her upcoming projects, saying, “I have two films on the boil, one I just finished on, another starts filming soon. Another two are still in the writing phase, but I think 2025 is my film year.”
As she continues to break boundaries and inspire, Tumi remains committed to working with fresh talent, both on stage and in film. “I’m really hoping to do more films with the fresh new faces of the film industry. I’m also excited about our new school campus in Wynberg. It truly has been a blessed year.”
With her ever-evolving career and fearless approach to comedy, Tumi Morake is set to continue blazing trails in the entertainment industry.
