Toss: “I Don’t Want to Show the Sexy Side of Myself All the Time.”

Toss has opened up about the importance of friendship in a relationship, explaining why he believes couples should build a strong friendship first.

The rapper opened up during an interview with The Cool alongside Nadia Nakai, where the pair discussed their joint EP Do’s and Don’ts. The conversation touched on their relationship, the inspiration behind the project and why they felt the music was important for the culture.

For Toss, being able to openly communicate with a partner is important. He believes a relationship should create an environment where both people can feel safe enough to share their emotions instead of turning to their friends first.

“It’s very important because I don’t want to go to my friends when I’m going through something and when I have a woman in my life. I don’t want to run to my friends because I’d rather tell her. She must be my safe place. I must be able to be vulnerable with her.”

He also explained that friendship gives couples the freedom to show different sides of their personalities without feeling pressured to always be romantic or serious.

“I have to be comfortable enough to be who I am and say whatever that I want to say. Speak my heart and be goofy if I want to be goofy, and be funny if I want to be funny and act however. That’s all it requires for you guys to be friends first.”

According to Toss, that level of comfort becomes especially important when the relationship is not centred around romance all the time.

“Because if its all just love and I don’t want show you the sexy side of myself all the time then it’s serious and tiring. That’s where friendship comes in and I don’t have to act and it’s just me being me.”

He went on to give an example of the playful side of their dynamic, recalling a recent moment while they were filming.

“There was a video that we shot yesterday, and she was just being serious, and I just ran past it and that’s just me being me. “
