Thuso Mbedu is stepping into the spotlight once again, this time as the lead in the highly anticipated film adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the action-packed fantasy is based on Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel. Paramount Pictures has set the release date for January 15, 2027, with the film hitting theaters in Imax.
Mbedu, known for her breakout role in The Woman King, will portray Zelie, a young woman on a journey to reclaim magic that was violently taken from her people by the oppressive King Saran. The narrative unfolds in a mythical African kingdom where Zelie and her older brother Tzain (played by Tosin Cole) team up with Princess Amari (Amandla Stenberg) and Prince Inan (Damson Idris) to overthrow the king’s brutal reign. It’s a powerful tale of resistance, identity, and hope.
This role marks Mbedu’s second collaboration with Viola Davis, who will portray Mama Agba. The pair first worked together on the 2022 film The Woman King, and Mbedu shared her excitement about the reunion. “Children of Blood and Bone was gifted to me in 2019, and truly, it’s one of the best gifts I’ve received. Upon reading it, I fell in love with it — to the point that I made it a prayer point,” she revealed. “I’m so grateful. To know that I have the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing people as we tell this great story is truly humbling. We will make you proud.”
The film features an ensemble cast of top-tier talent. Joining Mbedu are Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give, Bodies Bodies Bodies), Damson Idris (Snowfall, F1), and Tosin Cole (Supacell). The supporting cast includes Viola Davis as Mama Agba, Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) as Admiral Kaea, Idris Elba (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw) as Lekan, Lashana Lynch (Bob Marley: One Love) as Jumoke, and Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as King Saran.
Gina Prince-Bythewood, who directed The Woman King, brings her expertise to this epic, bringing the vivid world of Adeyemi’s novel to life. With themes of magic, resistance, and unity, the film promises to captivate audiences worldwide.
Mbedu’s journey from The Woman King to Children of Blood and Bone is a testament to her rising star power. Her heartfelt gratitude and enthusiasm for the project are evident in her words: “Thank you to everyone who continues to support and show up for us.” Fans of the book and newcomers alike can look forward to this captivating fantasy adventure.
