Thebe Magugu Collaborates with Woolworths South Africa

South African fashion designer Thebe Magugu is joining forces with Woolworths South Africa for a special Heritage Collection, bringing together contemporary fashion and the many stories that make up South Africa’s cultural identity.

Woolworths South Africa confirmed the collaboration on its Instagram page, teasing the collection and giving fashion lovers an early glimpse of what is to come.

The collaboration arrives at a fitting time, with South Africa preparing to celebrate Heritage Day later this month. Heritage Day takes place on Thursday, 24 September, and is a national public holiday dedicated to celebrating the country’s diverse cultures, traditions, languages and history.

For Magugu, the collection is about more than simply creating clothes. It is an opportunity to translate aspects of South African heritage into pieces that can become part of everyday wardrobes.

Speaking about the collaboration in the video shared by Woolworths, Magugu said: “It’s been months of ideas, fittings, and conversations all leading to this. South African heritage is made up of countless stories, and this collection is one small way of wearing them. These are pieces you’ll reach for long after Heritage Month. We hope you’ll find a piece that feels like your story.”

The timing also gives the collection added significance, as the entire month of September is recognised as Heritage Month, highlighting South Africa’s rich cultural landscape. Across the country, Heritage Day is often marked through food, music, family gatherings and cultural celebrations, with many South Africans coming together for a traditional braai.

The collaboration also adds another chapter to Magugu’s already impressive international fashion journey. In recent years, the designer has collaborated with Adidas, partnering on a gender-neutral sportswear collection, Finding Beauty. He also designed a striking kit for the Orlando Pirates football club.

His global collaborations extend into luxury fashion. Magugu has worked with Dior, teaming up with Maria Grazia Chiuri to reimagine the iconic “New Look” jacket and accessories while supporting Charlize Theron’s Africa Outreach Project.

He has also collaborated with Valentino, participating in Vogue’s dress-swap initiative and working with creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli to reimagine a haute couture gown.

Now, with Woolworths, Magugu is turning the spotlight back home. The Heritage Collection offers a chance to see South African identity through his distinctive fashion perspective — making Heritage Month something that can be celebrated not only through stories and traditions, but also through what people wear.
