After years of behind-the-scenes drama and disagreements, The Real Housewives of Johannesburg (RHOJ) has been officially canceled. The reality show, known for its glamorous cast and dramatic storylines, has been axed following conflicts between Sonia Mbele’s production company and Multichoice, this is according to ZiMoja.
Sources reveal that the show was canned primarily due to tensions between the channel and producer Sonia Mbele, a former Generations actor. According to a letter seen by ZiMoja, Multichoice decided not to recommission another season after a business review. Allegedly, the drama intensified when Sonia was instructed to cease direct communication with NBC, the creators of the show in the United States. “She is good at what she does and she is the one who brought the franchise to SA,” said a source close to the situation.
Another insider mentioned that while Sonia is not overly concerned about the cancellation, she is frustrated by attempts to discredit her work. “The show created stars such as Christal Kay, Evodia aka Madam, and her daughter Mercy, who became instant superstars during its debut season,” the source added.
Nomsa Philiso, CEO of General Entertainment at Multichoice, declined to comment on the matter, stating, “I have no comment on this one.” Sonia Mbele confirmed that she has been informed of the show’s cancellation. “My job is to set trends and let the rest follow. They must just pay me what they owe me,” she concluded.
The end of The Real Housewives of Johannesburg marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in South African reality television, leaving fans and cast members to reflect on its impact and legacy.
