South African actress Terry Pheto has shared a heartfelt tribute following the sudden passing of her Tsotsi co-star, Presley Chweneyagae. The award-winning actor, best known for his role as Tsotsi in the Oscar-winning film, has died at the age of 40.
The sad news was confirmed in a statement from his management agency, MLA, on behalf of his family. “It is with profound sadness that we confirm the untimely passing of one of South Africa’s most gifted and beloved actors, Presley Chweneyagae, at the age of 40,” the statement read.
Presley became a household name in 2005 when he played the lead role in Tsotsi, a film that won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 78th Oscars. His moving performance also earned him a Black Movie Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.
Terry Pheto, who starred alongside Presley in Tsotsi, shared emotional photos of the two of them holding the Oscar statue at the 2005 ceremony. She expressed her deep sadness in a touching message on social media:
“I’m shocked and saddened by the news of Presley’s sudden passing. My heart goes out to his family and the rest of our friends and colleagues in the film industry. We shared an unforgettable moment when we won the Oscar. It’s a moment I will forever cherish. May his soul rest in peace.”
Other South African celebrities have also expressed their grief. Actress Mampho Brescia wrote, “So terribly sorry to hear. May his soul rest in eternal peace and may God comfort those who loved and cared for him. A tragic loss for us all.”
South African media owner and television producer, Carol Bouwer also shared a heartfelt note, saying, “I thought of your heart my love. So so sad. Sending you and his family and friends prayers at this time.”
Besides Tsotsi, Presley was loved for his role as Cobra on the popular 1Magic series The River. He recently appeared in Cobrizzi, a spin-off series on Mzansi Magic that focused on his well-known character.
