Radio personality Thabo ‘Tbo Touch’ Molefe, the familiar voice behind Metro FM’s afternoon drive, recently opened up about his departure from the station in 2016. In a candid interview with 94.7, he shed light on the circumstances surrounding his exit and his journey thereafter.
According to Tbo Touch, his departure from Metro FM was an amicable one, despite his 11-year tenure with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) radio station. He emphasized that there was never any bad blood between him and the station. Instead, it was simply a misunderstanding that led to his exit. In his own words, he explained, “You don’t cut the umbilical cord if you understand the value of life. Our network is in the relationships we keep with people.”
Tbo Touch also reflected on a common phenomenon among talented individuals, where they often threaten to leave something significant in their lives when, in fact, it might be the best course of action. Just a month after parting ways with Metro FM, he made a bold move by purchasing a C605 and taking his family to Barcelona. This act was symbolic, signifying that there is indeed life after what others might perceive as your dream.
The discussion surrounding Tbo Touch’s departure from Metro FM also sparked headlines in March 2023. Reports circulated that the SABC was prepared to offer him a monthly salary of R480,000 to entice him back to the station. However, the SABC promptly refuted these claims, labeling them as misleading and factually incorrect.
The SABC clarified that negotiations regarding on-air talent and line-ups fall under the purview of program managers and business managers, not the CEO. Furthermore, the broadcaster does not provide car allowances and other fringe benefits to freelancers. Instead, the SABC adheres to standardized freelance rates. Which, according to their statement, would not see any individual earning even close to the amount reported in the media.
Despite the media buzz, Tbo Touch remains dedicated to his current role as the host of the afternoon drive show. “The Touchdown with Tbo Touch.” This show airs on Metro FM from Monday to Friday, running from 3 pm to 6 pm. It’s a testament to his resilience and commitment to delivering quality radio content to his audience.
In essence, Tbo Touch’s departure from Metro FM was a well-considered decision made without acrimony. Reflecting his desire for personal and professional growth beyond the confines of a specific location or role. His journey continues, both as a broadcaster and as an individual. Seeking to inspire others to embrace change and pursue their dreams.
