The National Film & TV Awards (NFTA) has just announced its nominees for 2024, marking a celebration of excellence across South Africa’s film and television industry. The event, now in its second year in South Africa, promises to shine a spotlight on the country’s finest talent, from seasoned veterans to emerging stars, all of whom have made significant contributions to creativity and storytelling.
Taking place on 9 November 2024 at the Opera Theatre in Pretoria, the NFTA continues its tradition of honouring the best in innovation and artistry. With categories that recognise acting prowess, television personalities, and competition shows, this year’s nominees reflect the diversity and richness of South African entertainment.
Best Actress 2024 is one of the most highly anticipated categories, sponsored by VK Jewellery. This year’s nominees include some of the industry’s most powerful female performers. Nambitha Ben-Mazwi, who stunned viewers in Savage Beauty and Empini, and Katlego Lebogang, known for her vibrant roles in Yoh! Christmas and Spinners, are both recognised for their versatility. The young and talented Ama Qamata (Blood and Water) joins the list, continuing to impress with her depth and charisma. South African screen icons Connie Ferguson (Heart of the Hunter) and Rosemary Zimu (Savage Beauty) round out the nominees, along with Sivenathi Mabuye for her role in How To Ruin Love.
The Best Actor 2024 category, sponsored by Krispy Kreme, brings together seasoned stars and rising talents. Siyabonga Twala (Empini) and Lawrence Maleka (Lobola Man) lead the nominations with their powerful, nuanced performances. They are joined by Sisanda Henna (Heart of the Hunter) and Melusi Mbele (The Butchers Soul), both of whom bring a unique intensity to their roles. Bonko Khoza (Red Ink) and Lunga Shabalala (A Soweto Love Story) are also nominated, adding fresh energy and versatility to the competition.
Best Female TV Personality 2024, sponsored by Falco Milano, is packed with fan-favorites. Nonku Williams (The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip), Shamiso Mosaka (Born Into Fame), Leanne Manas (Morning Live), and Carissa Cupido (Expresso Morning Show) are all recognised for their on-screen charisma. Meanwhile, reality TV icons Christall Kay, Bonang Matheba, Nomalanga Shozi, Lethabo ‘Lejoy, Lorna Maseko, and Minnie Dlamini add star power to this competitive category.
In the Best TV Presenter 2024 category, big names like Bonang Matheba (Miss SA), Ayanda Thabethe (Celebrity Game Night) and Lawrence Maleka (Big Brother) lead the nominations. Other contenders include Govan Whittles (Carte Blanche), Devi Sankree Govender (The Devi Show), Katlego Maboe (Deal or No Deal), Mimi Rey (Baking with Reys), and comedian Mpho Popps (Most Ridiculous with Mpho Popps).
Best Competition TV Show 2024 showcases the most exciting and captivating shows of the year. Nominees include, The Ultimatum: South Africa, Big Brother Mzansi, Clash of the Choirs S4, Crown Chasers, Kokkedoor: Vuur & Vlam, and The Masked Singer: South Africa.
One of the most coveted titles, Celebrity Personality of the Year 2024, sponsored by Vida Is Life, features a star-studded list of nominees. Internationally recognized stars Trevor Noah and Nomzamo Mbatha compete alongside South African legends Connie Ferguson, Lawrence Maleka, Zozibini Tunzi, Katlego Maboe, Maps Maponyane, Bonang Matheba, Candice Modiselle, Clement Maosa, and Somizi Mhlongo.
