South Africa’s musical elite gathered at the University of the Witwatersrand’s Linder Auditorium on Friday, July 19, to celebrate three decades of Disney’s iconic animated film, The Lion King. The “Disney’s The Lion King 30th Anniversary Tribute Special” brought together some of the nation’s top artists for an unforgettable night of music and memories.
Among the performers were acclaimed singers Shekhinah, Vusi Nova, and Lira, who joined a lineup of talented artists to pay tribute to the beloved film. The evening’s highlight was a special appearance by the legendary composer and performer Lebo M, whose music has been synonymous with The Lion King since its inception.
The tribute also featured performances by Monique Steyn, Zita Pretorius, Brandon October, Monde Msutwana, and Tracey-Lee Oliver. Accompanied by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Eddie Clayton, the event showcased songs from the original film, the Broadway stage show, the 2019 movie, and other classic Disney movie moments.
Adding to the excitement, the tribute is set to air exclusively on e.tv next month as part of the channel’s “The Lion King Festival.” This festival will take place in August and will showcase the entire trilogy of The Lion King, allowing fans to relive the story’s most iconic moments.
Viewers can catch “Disney’s The Lion King 30th Anniversary Tribute Special” on e.tv on August 18 at 5 pm, with a repeat broadcast on eMovies on August 19 at 7 pm. This celebration promises to be a fitting homage to a film that has touched the hearts of millions around the world.
This moment izolo gave me goosebumps.
Lira got a standing ovation when she entered the auditorium. Guests young and old elated to see her. Some screaming “We love you Lira”.
