June, celebrated globally as #PrideMonth, brings extra reason for celebration this year as the South African series Blood & Water clinches the prestigious Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion award at Screen International’s second annual Global Production Awards. The ceremony took place on May 20th, 2024, during the Cannes Film Festival at the Mademoiselle Gray d’Albion Plage in Cannes, France.
Produced by Gambit Films for Netflix, Blood & Water has captivated audiences with its compelling narrative and strong representation. The teen crime drama stars Ama Qamata, Khosi Ngema, and Gail Mabalane, and is set against the vibrant backdrop of Cape Town. The story follows Puleng (played by Qamata), a high school girl who transfers to an elite school when she suspects that one of the students, Fikile (played by Ngema), might be her sister who was abducted as a baby.
Since its debut on May 20th, 2020, Blood & Water has released four successful seasons, each building on the gripping storyline and richly developed characters. The show has also been recognised for its excellence in cinematography and sound design, winning Best TV Drama at the 2021 South African Film and Television Awards.
The series delves into themes of family, identity, and the dark underworld of human trafficking, offering not only entertainment but also a poignant commentary on real-world issues. As Puleng unravels the mystery of her missing sister, she uncovers deeper secrets within her family and social circle, making Blood & Water a must-watch for its suspenseful plot and social relevance.
This latest accolade at the Global Production Awards highlights the show’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, further cementing its status as a groundbreaking series on the international stage.
