South Africa is in mourning following the passing of beloved actor Darlington Michaels, best known for his unforgettable role as Georgie “Papa G” Zamdela on the long-running soap Isidingo. Michaels’ death was confirmed by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), which paid tribute to the iconic figure who made an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.

According to IOL, in a heartfelt statement, the SABC said, “The SABC is deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Darlington Michaels. His immense contribution to the entertainment industry will forever be remembered. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Michaels family, friends, and fans.”

Michaels had been battling health issues for weeks and was admitted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto. Last week, ZiMoja reported that the actor had been unwell for some time. His passing marks the end of a long struggle that began in 2016 when he suffered a stroke, forcing him to step away from acting to focus on recovery.

Though South African audiences last saw Michaels in the 2020 Mzansi Magic drama Vula Vala, his influence in the industry stretched far beyond his screen appearances. Through his Melisizwe Community Theatre program, Michaels mentored young performers in Soweto, cultivating future talent and contributing to the cultural legacy of South African theatre.

The actor’s striking screen presence, known for his flamboyant silk shirts and signature rings, left a lasting impression on his fans. As tributes poured in following the news of his passing, many remembered him not just for his talent but also for his distinctive style and ability to effortlessly switch between languages.
