South Africa is mourning the loss of one of its most celebrated actresses, Nandi Nyembe, who passed away at the age of 75.

The news of her death was confirmed on Saturday in a joint statement by the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, and the Nyembe family. Nyembe, affectionately known as Mam’ Nandi, was a household name, admired for her unforgettable performances in local television shows and films such as Isibaya, Soul City, Zone 14, Yizo Yizo, Jacob’s Cross, Isithunzi, Adulting, and the Oscar-nominated movie Yesterday.

The official statement read: “It is with profound sorrow that the Nyembe family, together with the National Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, announce the passing of one of South Africa’s most treasured icons of the arts, Mam’ Nandi Nyembe. Mam’ Nandi was far more than an actress; she was the very soul of South African storytelling. A teacher, a guide, and a mother to this nation, she carried our struggles, our laughter, and our victories through every performance with truth, dignity, and heart.”

Her family also spoke of the deep personal loss they are experiencing. Her grandson, Jabulani Nyembe, shared an emotional message on behalf of the family:

“Our hearts are broken as we share the loss of our beloved mother and grandmother, Nandi Nyembe. To the world, she was a gifted actress; to us, she was our everything. Her love, laughter and strength will stay with us always. We are so grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers and support during this time.”

Tributes poured in from across the country, with fans, fellow actors, and musicians remembering her remarkable contribution to the arts. Singer and songwriter Cici also expressed her sadness and used the moment to highlight the struggles faced by actors in the industry. She wrote:

“I’ll tell you what’s more painful than death, it is dedicating your life to your work but when the final curtain call comes you have nothing to show for it. Creatives really need to be treated better, especially actors. How long shall it be.”
