The son of actress Sonia Mbele is accused of rape. On Monday, 23-year-old Donell Mbele appeared in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on two rape-related allegations.

The allegations stem from a complaint filed with the Sandton South African Police Service (SAPS) by his 17-year-old girlfriend, who claims that Mbele sexually assaulted her at his Morningside home in December 2024, according to NPA spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwane.

“She explained that the two of them were out on a date at ClearWater Mall last month.  After consuming some beverages and upon realising that the restaurant they were seated at, was about to close, they both agreed to move to a different venue,” Phindi explains.

Donel’s house is where the alleged rape event occurred. “She said the accused allegedly indicated that he wanted them to pass by his place of residence as he needed to charge his phone. On arrival, that’s when the incidents allegedly occurred,” Phindi says.

The former Generations actress told Drum that she will wait till the truth is revealed and that there is still more information that has to be understood. “There’s a whole lot that is not known and I’d rather not comment until the truth comes out in this case,” she stated.

According to Drum, the accused was freed on R1000 bail after the case was postponed until February 10, 2025, to allow for additional investigation.
