As October marks Mental Health Awareness Month, Skeem Saam actress Lethabo Mekoa, known for her role as the rebellious Ntswaki, is shedding light on the importance of mental health in the entertainment industry. At just 20 years old, Lethabo has already made a significant impact on South African television, but her success has also brought awareness to the pressures actors face behind the scenes.

Speaking to Daily Sun, Lethabo emphasized the need for mental health support within the industry. “Support for mental health within the industry is needed, as it can be a very demanding environment,” she shared. The rising star explained that while her role on Skeem Saam has been thrilling, it comes with intense challenges that require emotional resilience.

Lethabo also expressed her hope for more mentorship opportunities for young talent like herself. “I wish young talented people would be provided mentorship opportunities and ensuring fair and equal representation of different stories in the South African entertainment,” she added. This focus on nurturing future stars is something Lethabo feels is crucial for the industry’s growth.

Just a few months ago, Lethabo received The Royalty Soapie Award, a moment she describes as “surreal and humbling.” Reflecting on the achievement, she said, “It’s a moment that reaffirmed all the hard work I’ve put into my craft. More than anything, it motivated me to keep pushing boundaries and growing as an actress.”

Winning the award has given her newfound confidence. “It’s a reminder that hard work and passion are recognised, and it has opened more doors for me in the industry. It also pushes me to take on more challenging roles and continuously improve myself,” she said.

For Lethabo, the recognition she’s received feels almost unreal. “I always believed in my talent. Being recognised now feels like a dream come true. I’m incredibly grateful for the appreciation I’ve received. It drives me to keep delivering my best performances,” she said.
