In an exclusive interview with Sowetan S Magazine, the multi-talented African Trap Music sensation, Sjava, unveils his mission to conquer both the music and acting worlds.
Fresh off his recent role as Prince Mkhuseli Khahlamba in BET Africa’s daily drama Queendom, the 2018 BET award recipient showcases his versatility. However, Sjava’s heart remains entrenched in music as he drops his soul-stirring single Ngibongiseni, a precursor to the deluxe version of his latest album, Isibuko, slated for release on May 10th.
Reflecting on his musical journey, Sjava shares, “I make music for those who need healing, self-reflection, and just to have a good time.” Born Jabulani Hadebe in Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal, Sjava’s passion for performance led him to the small screen in 2005, ultimately capturing audiences’ hearts on acclaimed shows like Zone 14 and Isibaya.
Joining a stellar cast on Queendom, Sjava finds joy in portraying a character akin to himself, relishing the opportunity to celebrate African culture both through acting and music. His involvement extends beyond acting, as he lends his distinctive voice to the drama’s title track, Wena Wamanzi, affirming his multifaceted artistry.
Notably, Sjava’s musical prowess transcended borders with his feature on the renowned Black Panther soundtrack, offering a unique perspective on music’s role in cinematography. His journey with Ambitiouz Entertainment since 2015 has seen him rise to prominence, crafting hits like Ngempela and Amakhehla.
In a recent career milestone, Sjava took the stage alongside R&B legend Joe Thomas, opening for the icon’s final concert of a three-day tour. Reflecting on the experience, Sjava expresses gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country’s diverse music scene.
