Simphiwe Dana Celebrates MOYA While Honouring the Legacy of Zandisile

Award-winning South African singer-songwriter Simphiwe Dana is celebrating two significant milestones in her musical journey. The acclaimed artist recently released her surprise studio album MOYA and is preparing for an exclusive vinyl signing event for her groundbreaking debut album Zandisile.

The upcoming vinyl signing event for Zandisile gives fans an opportunity to celebrate an album that has remained influential more than two decades after its release.

Speaking to OKMzansi Magazine, Simphiwe reflected on the inspiration behind MOYA, the lasting impact of Zandisile, and what supporters can expect from the special vinyl signing event.

1. Congratulations on the release of MOYA. How does this album reflect your current emotional, spiritual, and artistic journey?

MOYA was born after the loss of my mother. It was a way for me to deal with her passing. This was during Covid. Many of us lost loved ones during that time. I then felt that the album could help others deal with their loss as well.

2. What inspired you to host a vinyl signing event for your debut album Zandisile at this stage in your career?

It is something that I’ve always wanted to do. The timing seemed perfect.

3. Looking back, how do you reflect on the cultural and musical impact that Zandisile has had over the past two decades?

The success of Zandisile took me by surprise. I never expected my music to have the impact it did. I’m blessed to make a living off my passion. The fact that the album is still a success continues to surprise me.

4. Did you anticipate the level of influence and longevity that Zandisile would achieve when it was first released?

Not at all. I’m just as surprised.

5. MOYA explores themes of healing, self-discovery, and spiritual renewal. What inspired these themes during the creative process?

Well they both were born out of frustration and pain. Zandisile was inspired by my fear of raising my daughter. MOYA was born out of loss.

6. Your music is deeply rooted in Xhosa cosmology and Afrocentric identity. How does this continue to shape your artistry today?

I’m a village girl. And am very proud of it. I grew up speaking isiXhosa fluently. I’m proud to represent my people in my music.

7. How has your understanding of legacy evolved from your debut release to your current body of work?

I’m a perfectionist. So I always give my work 150%. And I take my time perfecting it. And I don’t compete with anyone. I’m my own competition.

8. What can fans expect from the Zandisile vinyl signing event in terms of experience and atmosphere?

A lot of storytelling. I have gathered a lot of experience the past 23 years.

9. What do you hope audiences take away when reflecting on both Zandisile and MOYA as part of your broader artistic journey?

I wish them healing and peace.
