Showmax has just released a first-look teaser of Soft Life, a new drama series led by Zizipho Buti, premiering on 18 November 2024. In the much-anticipated series, viewers will follow Owami Gqoji, a young woman who dives into the secretive world of high-society companionship to cover her mother’s growing medical bills. As Owami juggles her double life, the stakes grow higher, forcing her to hide her new profession from everyone she holds dear. New episodes will air every Monday.
According to Showmax Stories, Zizipho Buti, known for her roles in Nkululeko and Generations: The Legacy, plays the lead role of Owami. Reflecting on her character, Zizipho shares, “Owami has made me realize that there are so many young people who have found themselves in such compromising situations. I hope that the story will encourage people to have honest conversations about this.”
Adding depth to the drama is Mampho Brescia, who portrays Zam, the owner of NubiaBlaq, a front for the escort agency known as The Girlfriend Experience (GFE). Mampho’s character, Zam, is a strict yet elegant figure who runs the agency with an iron fist. Joining the cast is Katlego Lebogang (Spinners) as Zinhle, the Queen Bee of GFE, who becomes Owami’s mentor. The show also stars SAFTA winner Nambitha Mpumlwana (Saints & Sinners, Yizo Yizo, Tsotsi) as Judge Iris Makhaza, Owami’s boyfriend’s overprotective mother.
The 13-episode series was created by Vusi Zion for Afriprime and produced by Urban Brew Studios. Directed by SAFTA winners Nozipho Nkelemba (Gomora) and Nthabiseng Mokoena (The Wife) the show delves into the complexities of modern society.
“Soft Life is a forward-thinking show where we are dealing with everyday issues happening in society, holding up a mirror to the public,” says Nozipho Nkelemba. “It was interesting for me to see how far this subculture has grown since my younger days.”
Director Nthabiseng Mokoena adds, “The cast really immersed themselves in their characters. More than anything, viewers should look forward to new faces who will bring much joy, laughter, and sometimes heartache to our screens.”
With an all-star cast and a gripping storyline, Soft Life promises to be one of Showmax’s standout dramas this year.
