Fans of Shaka iLembe have a new reason to get excited as the highly anticipated third and final season of the hit African drama is set to arrive soon.
The first images from the final season of the Bomb Productions series have been released, giving viewers a glimpse of what is ahead for King Shaka and the Zulu kingdom. The upcoming season will also take the isiZulu-language drama to an international audience when it makes its debut at MIPCOM Cannes later this month under the title Shaka iLembe: Zulu King.
According to DEADLINE, Season 3 takes place four years after the events of the second season. Shaka’s kingdom has become dominant across Southern Africa, but the king now faces new external pressure as British expansion and growing European influence begin to affect the region.
The new season will also expand the story to include the emerging Basotho Kingdom of Moshoeshoe, King Faku’s Mpondo Kingdom and the settlement of Port Natal.
The upcoming season will introduce several new characters, including Lerato Mvelase as Queen Mpikase, Aiden Scott as British trader Henry Francis Fynn, Conrad Kemp as Lt. Francis Farewell and Wonder Ndlovu as Prince Mpande.
Nomzamo Mbatha, who stars as Queen Nandi and has also played an important role behind the scenes, shared her excitement about the series’ international journey.
“Shaka iLembe: Zulu King is proof of what African storytelling can achieve when it’s given the room to be ambitious, told at scale, and shared from the inside out,” said Mbatha. “As an executive producer, I’m most proud of the series’ success at home and abroad, and of its real contribution to our creative economy.”
Desireé Markgraaf, an executive producer at Bomb, also reflected on the long journey behind the production.
“Making Shaka iLembe: Zulu King has been a journey of more than 12 years for the Bomb creative team. Our ambition was to tell this story with the scale, drama and epic sweep of world-class mainstream storytelling, while portraying the Africa we know and love with the dignity, complexity and humanity it deserves.”
“Our partnership with M-Net, Studiocanal, and Canal+ has made this enormous undertaking possible, and we have been privileged to have the creative vision of Oscar-nominated director Angus Gibson guiding the series across all three seasons.”
With Season 3 set to bring the story to its final chapter, viewers can expect a bigger world, new characters and fresh challenges for Shaka and his kingdom as the series prepares to reach audiences beyond South Africa.
