Award-winning musician Ringo Madlingozi, a name that recently reverberated in headlines following his abrupt exit from the DStv Delicious Festival stage mid-performance, takes us on a candid journey through his festival experience. Revealing a narrative fraught with disappointment and frustration.

In a candid conversation with Sowetan, Madlingozi delves into his feelings of injustice. Comparing his treatment at the festival to that of international musicians who graced the same stage. With over 35 years of music expertise under his belt. Madlingozi firmly believes that he has outgrown the role of being an opening act, a sentiment he passionately shares.

The renowned “Ndiyagodola” singer sheds light on the excruciating wait he endured, lingering for two agonizing hours before being granted a precious soundcheck opportunity on the fateful day of his performance at the DStv Delicious Festival. In his own words, “My former management convinced me to perform at the festival even though I felt that I’ve amassed too much experience, over 35 years, to be one of the opening acts.”

Despite his reservations, he reluctantly agreed. Driven by the assurance that his loyal fans would be present to bask in his musical prowess. However, upon arriving at the venue, the stark reality stood in stark contrast to his expectations – a noticeable absence of his dedicated fan base.

The abrupt curtailment of his performance left a bitter taste. Prompting him to seize the mic during his final song and proclaim to the audience that he would never partake in the festival again.

In the wake of this festival fracas, Madlingozi’s grievances resonated far and wide, reverberating through the media landscape. However, his quest for justice did not end there, as he passionately expressed his disillusionment with the DStv Delicious Festival organizers. Accusing them of displaying a blatant lack of respect for South African talent.

Madlingozi’s message was clear: until he receives a satisfactory explanation from the festival organizers. Until they address the profound sense of diminishment he and his team endured. He would not grace the festival’s stage again.

In response, Funeka Peppeta. The Media Director of the DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival, sought to quell the rising tide of controversy. She emphatically asserted the festival’s commitment to treating all artists with the utmost respect and professionalism.

Over a decade of existence, Delicious Festival has provided a stage for a plethora of South African talents. Supporting them not only through live performances but also by fostering a platform for their engagement with festivalgoers and the broader media landscape.

Peppeta underscored that, from booking to on-site experience. Every artist is regarded with equality and fairness. The festival organizers, cognizant of Madlingozi’s complaints, pledged to investigate his allegations. Demonstrating their dedication to preserving the festival’s reputation as a beacon of respect for South African artists.
