He did it! Wade van Niekerk is the name on everyone’s lips right now after he clinched South Africa’s first gold medals at the Rio Olympics. SA’s Wade van Niekerk wins SA’s 1st gold at Rio Olympics.
As if that wasn’t legendary enough, Wade broke a seventeen year old record as he finished the 400m race in 43 minutes and 3 seconds, which makes him the new world record holder.
For the runner, it’s still feels unreal that he won a gold medal and set a new record. “I still think you need to let it sink it , it is still so fresh I don’t think I was in that race tonight. That is how unreal it feels, I even had the opportunity to take a victory lap so it is a lot of improvement,” he said.
Niekerk said he was really amazed by the time because he went in with no expectations. “I went out there for any medal tonight, I said God, I just want to be top three tonight and look what happened. I got top three, I got a world record, I got a lifetime best. Things have been such a blessing for me tonight.”
Congrats to Wade for making us all proudly South African right now! Watch the unbelievable moment he won his first gold medal below.
