South African actress Rosemary Zimu is having an incredible year, with her career soaring to new heights in 2024. From jet-setting around the globe for film premieres to attending the prestigious Essence Festival, Rosemary is making a name for herself internationally. In a conversation with Drum, she shares her excitement, gratitude, and the highlights of a truly remarkable year.
When asked about her biggest achievement this year, Rosemary’s smile says it all. “I’ve had so many, but if I had to put it all in one bag, it’d be travelling for my work. Going to other countries to premiere the films I was in and experiencing different cultures—that was my biggest highlight,” she says, her gratitude evident.
This whirlwind of international travel has not only been a career milestone but a personal dream come true. “I’ve prayed to go overseas, not just for vacations but for work, and it’s happened this year. I’m so grateful,” she adds.
One standout moment for Rosemary was attending the Essence Festival in the US, where she celebrated the international release of NINE, a film she stars in. “That was really dope. It was for an international film I did called NINE. It’s not in South Africa yet—it’s only in the US and Ghana,” she recalls.
Her role in NINE came at the perfect time. “That opportunity came literally straight after Savage Beauty came out,” she explains. “The producer, Angela White, saw Savage Beauty and called my agent immediately. She said, ‘I need her in my film,’ and made me a lead.”
Filmed in Ghana in 2022, NINE has taken Rosemary to numerous international locations for its premieres. “We’ve travelled to France, Ghana, Nigeria, Essence, and we’re going to another state in the United States soon,” she says, reflecting on the journey.
Throughout her career, Rosemary has remained grounded, crediting her faith for her success. “Girl, it’s been booming because when Jesus says yes, nobody can shut it!” she exclaims.
With such a meteoric rise, it’s natural to wonder if Rosemary ever imagined this level of success. “I knew I would, I just didn’t know when,” she says with confidence. “I’m so blessed, and I know that from here it can only go to the top.”
Despite her rising fame, Rosemary’s creative talents extend beyond acting. “If I weren’t an actor, I’d probably be either a set designer, a creative director, or a cinematographer,” she reveals.
Looking ahead, Rosemary is taking things one step at a time. “I haven’t started my 2025 vision board yet. I’m still ‘Decembering,’ please,” she laughs. “When the first of Jan hits, that’s when I’ll do my mood board. Right now, I’m just living life. I’m just a girl.”
