South African singer-songwriter KLA (Kayla Neilson) is fast becoming one of the most exciting new names in local music. Known for blending pop, R&B, soul, and African rhythms, KLA has carved out a sound that’s both emotional and powerful.
Her latest single, “Peace,” takes listeners on a deeply personal journey, exploring the ups and downs of love and self-discovery. The song is raw, soulful, and heartfelt — proving why KLA is one to watch in the SA music scene.
In an exclusive interview with OK Mzansi Magazine, KLA opened up about the story behind “Peace,” her creative process, and how she continues to grow as an artist.
1. “Peace” feels deeply personal and emotionally honest. What inspired the song, and what was the moment that sparked its creation?
Definitely. I’ve had my fair share of putting the needs of others before my own, and I think that’s something a lot of people can relate to. It came from a real place, a point of realization that peace is something you have to protect, not plead for.
2. The lyrics touch on a partner who says they’re “pushing P” but doesn’t offer true peace. What does that phrase mean to you in the context of modern relationships?
We’re grown now… work, dreams, and responsibilities take so much out of people. Sometimes, a relationship starts competing for the same space as your purpose, and that imbalance can create distance. You might both be growing, just not in sync.
3. How did the songwriting and recording process unfold for “Peace”? Did you write it alone, or was it a collaborative effort?
I worked on it with Rehsa, who produced and co-wrote the track. The whole concept came from a conversation about how chasing your career and purpose can sometimes lead to the quiet ending of a relationship. It was real, and that honesty translated beautifully into the music.
4. The track beautifully balances vulnerability and strength. Was it difficult to open up emotionally while writing and performing it?
I struggle to record when I’m in the middle of something emotionally heavy, but this one was different. I’d already moved past the situation, so I could look back and still tap into those emotions but with clarity.
5. How does “Peace” build on the story or sound you introduced with your breakout single, “Nobody’s Looking”?
It shows so much growth. Nobody’s Looking was fun, flirty, and a bit surface-level. I wasn’t ready to be vulnerable yet. Peace is more introspective; it shows where I am now, emotionally, and artistically.
6. You started performing at the age of 12 — from school shows to streaming platforms. How has that early start shaped the artist you are today?
It taught me resilience. When you learn to handle criticism at a young age, it builds something in you … confidence, thick skin, and perspective. I still carry that with me.
7. What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned while transitioning from a young performer to a professional musician?
I used to just dream. Now I understand the dream and the business. This industry is beautiful but strategic and not every decision can come from emotion.
8. The song speaks to emotional disconnect in modern relationships. What does “peace” personally mean to you — both in love and in life?
Peace, to me, is alignment. When you’re grounded in your values, you start seeing what’s for you and what isn’t. Sometimes we hold onto “ideal” situations out of fear but ideal doesn’t always mean healthy.
9. You’ve mentioned blending pop, R&B, soul, and African rhythms. How do you approach fusing global influences with an authentic South African sound?
Africa is overflowing with talent, and rhythm lives in us naturally. I want to keep collaborating with homegrown producers, writers, and engineers who know how to merge global sounds with our authentic African pulse. That’s where the magic is.
10. Beyond music, you’re a commercial model, content creator, and Miss SA Top 35 finalist. How do you balance these different creative paths?
It’s definitely a balancing act! But I genuinely love everything I do. Each passion fuels the next. Staying grounded spending time with friends and family helps me reset and come back stronger.
11. Does your background in marketing and modeling influence your approach to your music and visual storytelling?
Absolutely. Modeling taught me how to tell stories visually and understand direction and why things are placed, written, or styled a certain way. Pairing that with marketing gave me a real appreciation for the psychology behind what connects people.
12. Representation matters — especially for young South African women in entertainment. How do you hope your journey inspires other young artists?
To never give up, no matter how long it takes. You have to be willing to go the distance for your dreams even when no one’s clapping yet.
13. You’ve cited Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Kehlani as inspirations. What have you learned from their artistry that you bring into your own music?
Their humility and work ethic are unmatched. They’re constantly reinventing themselves but never losing who they are. That balance between evolution and authenticity inspires me every day.
14. Your songs often explore love, growth, and self-discovery. What themes are you hoping to explore next in your upcoming projects?
I’m in a space of experimenting, exploring every side of me: vulnerability, confidence, sass, and playfulness. It’s about showing all the layers, not just one.
15. Finally, how would you describe the “KLA sound” to someone hearing your music for the first time, and what can fans expect from you next?
It’s something new yet familiar, nostalgic rhythms with a pop edge and R&B soul. The kind of sound that feels like déjà vu but still takes you somewhere unexpected.
