The National Film and Video Foundation has officially unveiled its list of nominations for the 18th annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), and the globally acclaimed documentary Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story has earned recognition with three nominations.
According to Bona Magazine, the powerful documentary, which chronicles the life of South African rugby legend Siya Kolisi, has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature, Best Achievement in Sound, and Best Achievement in Editing, according to broadcaster DStv.
Based on his autobiography Rise, the film brings to life Kolisi’s journey from humble beginnings in Zwide, a township in the Eastern Cape, to his extraordinary rise as the first black captain of the Springboks and leading them to victory in the Rugby World Cup. The film also touches on themes of faith, resilience, and the courage it took for Kolisi to overcome obstacles and become the man he is today.
In his autobiography, Kolisi expressed hope that his story would inspire others facing similar hardships, empowering them to rise above their circumstances. Fittingly Rise also translates to his mother’s name, Phakama, which Kolisi emphasises in his book.
